Choose Your Cupping Protocol

Pick how deep you want to go. Brief is the guided 1–10 flow shown in the steps below — and it works in the free trial. Full SCA is the classic 100-point cupping form, included with Home. CVA follows SCA's new Coffee Value Assessment — coming with the Expert tier. There's also a blind cupping toggle that hides bean names and predictions so you can taste without bias.

Start a New Rating

Tap ‘Add Rating’ to begin. If you have coffees in your inventory, you'll select from them — first choosing the region, then the country, then the specific bean. Or simply type a coffee name manually.

Set Roast & Brew Details

Select the roast level (Light through French) — the city name reference appears automatically. Choose the processing method and brew method used for this cup. The brew method is required so your ratings can be filtered and compared by how the coffee was prepared.

Score the Cup

Give an overall score from 1 to 10 using the visual rating selector. RoastSource pre-fills a predicted score from the bean's origin, processing, and roast data, and once you score it shows ‘predicted: N (± diff)’ next to your actual — so you can see where a roast over- or under-delivered. You always have the final say. (In blind mode, the prediction stays hidden until you save.)

Rate Cupping Attributes

In the Brief protocol, dial in five cupping attributes: Sweetness, Acidity, Body, Development, and Cleanliness. Each uses an intuitive slider scale. Recommended values based on the bean profile pulse gently to guide you — but every palate is different. (Choose Full SCA or CVA and you'll fill in that protocol's official scoresheet instead.)

Add Flavor Notes

Pick descriptors from a flavor picker built on the SCA flavor wheel taxonomy — tap a category chip (Fruit, Sweetness, Floral, Spice, and more) to reveal its descriptor pills. Primary suggestions glow amber; supporting notes glow lighter. You can also flag any undesirable notes (grassy, ashy, etc.) for tracking development issues.

Save & Review

Optionally mark the coffee as a favorite, then save your rating. It's instantly searchable and filterable — by origin, brew method, roast level, or score. Over time, your ratings reveal patterns: which origins you prefer, which roast levels suit which beans, and which brew methods bring out the best in each coffee.
