Java Geek puts that knowledge in one place — instead of scattered across YouTube videos, Reddit threads, and half-remembered articles — so you can connect the dots between what you're learning and what you're tasting in every cup.

Overview

Java Geek is the knowledge engine of RoastSource. It contains everything you need to understand coffee from seed to cup — bean varieties and their characteristics, how processing methods shape flavor, an interactive world map covering 49 coffee-producing countries, the science behind roasting, and a comprehensive roast level guide.

The module also includes the "Find Your Type" personality quiz, which identifies your coffee personality from 7 types and provides 14 tailored recommendations that flow into the Blending module. Java Geek content enriches your understanding and helps you make more informed decisions across Inventory, Roasting, and Blending.

1 Exploring Bean Types

  1. Go to the Bean Types section.
  2. Compare the four main species: Arabica (complex, aromatic), Robusta (bold, highly caffeinated), Liberica (woody, floral), and Excelsa (tart, complex).
  3. Learn about popular cultivars within Arabica: Bourbon, Typica, Gesha, SL28, Caturra, and more.
  4. Understand how cultivar affects flavor, yield, and disease resistance.

Things to Consider

Arabica makes up 60-70% of world coffee production and is the focus of specialty coffee. Cultivar (variety) affects flavor significantly — Gesha is prized for its floral, jasmine-like complexity, while Bourbon offers rich sweetness. When purchasing beans, knowing the cultivar helps predict the cup character.

2 Understanding Processing Methods

  1. Go to the Processing section.
  2. Compare the main methods: washed (clean, bright), natural (fruity, complex), honey (sweet, balanced), and anaerobic (experimental, intense).
  3. Learn how each method removes the cherry fruit from the seed and how this shapes cup character.
  4. Understand the spectrum from clean and predictable (washed) to wild and variable (natural).

Things to Consider

Processing method has as much impact on flavor as the origin country. Washed coffees are the most consistent and let terroir shine through. Natural (dry-processed) coffees have the highest variability but can produce extraordinary fruity complexity. Honey process sits between the two. Anaerobic fermentation is a newer, experimental approach producing intense and unique flavors.

3 Learning About Origins

  1. Go to Growing Regions and use the interactive world map.
  2. Click any region label (Central America, Africa, Middle East, Pacific Islands, etc.) — the map zooms in and reveals country callouts.
  3. Scroll down to the country cards with altitude, climate, and flavor profiles for each of the 49 countries, including the Middle East and Pacific Islands.
  4. Click another region or use the back control to zoom out.
  5. Once you have rated 1+ cups, a personal "your taste across origins" overlay appears at the top — your average score, top origins, and favorites by country.

Things to Consider

Higher altitude generally means denser beans and more complex flavors — the slower maturation at altitude allows more sugars and acids to develop. Climate and soil composition (terroir) create the regional character that distinguishes Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Colombian Huila, even when the same cultivar is grown. Use this knowledge when selecting beans in Inventory.

4 Understanding Coffee Grades

  1. Go to the Coffee Grades section.
  2. Learn the grading systems used by different countries.
  3. Understand screen size (bean dimensions), defect counts, and altitude-based grades.
  4. Use grade information to evaluate purchasing quality and set expectations.

Things to Consider

Grading systems vary significantly by country — Ethiopian Grade 1 is not equivalent to Colombian Supremo. Some countries grade by altitude (e.g., Guatemala SHB = Strictly Hard Bean = high altitude), others by screen size, and others by defect count. Specialty-grade coffee requires an SCA cupping score of 80 or above regardless of the country grading system.

5 Learning Roasting Science

  1. Go to the Roasting Science section.
  2. Understand the Maillard reaction — amino acids react with sugars to produce browning and complex flavors.
  3. Learn about caramelization — sugar breakdown that contributes sweetness and color.
  4. Study first crack (steam and CO2 release at approximately 385°F / 196°C) and second crack (cellulose breakdown at approximately 440°F / 227°C).

Things to Consider

Most flavor development happens in the window between first and second crack — this is where the roaster has the most control over the final cup. Extending development time too long results in baked, flat flavors. Rushing through this phase produces underdeveloped, grassy notes. Understanding the chemistry helps you make better decisions during roasting.

6 Understanding Roast Levels

  1. Go to Roast Levels and explore the full spectrum from Light (Cinnamon, approximately 385°F / 196°C) through Medium (City, City+) to Dark (Full City+, French, Italian).
  2. Check By Region for origin-specific roast level recommendations.
  3. Check By Processing for method-specific guidance.
  4. Check By Brew Method for brewing-method-specific recommendations.

Things to Consider

Light roasts preserve origin character — the unique flavors that come from the bean's terroir and processing. Dark roasts develop roast character — caramel, chocolate, smoky notes that come from the roasting process itself. Medium roasts balance both. The optimal roast level depends on the bean's origin, processing, and your intended brew method.

7 Checking Growing Seasons

  1. Go to Growing Seasons.
  2. Find the harvest windows for each growing region.
  3. Plan your purchases around peak freshness — buy close to harvest time.
  4. Understand northern vs. southern hemisphere timing differences.

Things to Consider

Buying close to harvest ensures the freshest green coffee. Northern hemisphere countries (e.g., Ethiopia, Central America) typically harvest October through March. Southern hemisphere countries (e.g., Brazil, Kenya) harvest April through September. Some equatorial regions have two harvests per year. Factor in shipping time — beans arrive at US vendors weeks to months after harvest.

8 Finding Your Coffee Personality

  1. Go to Find Your Type.
  2. Take the quiz to discover which of the 7 coffee personality types matches you.
  3. Get 14 tailored coffee and blend recommendations based on your type.
  4. Use the results to guide your bean purchases and blending experiments.

Things to Consider

Your coffee personality type reflects your flavor preferences — whether you gravitate toward bright and fruity, earthy and bold, balanced and smooth, or something else. The 14 recommendations per type span different origins, processing methods, and blend styles. Results link directly to the Blending module for personality-based blend recommendations.

9 Exploring AUC & Heat-Transfer Primers

  1. Go to the Roasting Science section and find the AUC (Area Under Curve) primer.
  2. Learn how AUC measures the cumulative thermal energy your beans absorb during a roast — a single number that captures the total heat input.
  3. Explore the Heat-Transfer Modes primer to understand the three ways heat reaches your beans: conduction (contact), convection (hot air), and radiation (infrared).
  4. Use this knowledge to understand why different roaster types (air vs. drum) produce different flavor results with the same bean.

Things to Consider

AUC is a metric popularized by Artisan and used in advanced roast analysis. Understanding it is optional — it is most useful in Science mode when comparing roast profiles. The Heat-Transfer primer explains why air roasters (mostly convection) roast differently from drum roasters (conduction + convection). This context helps you adapt recipes when switching between roaster types.

10 Exploring Tasting & Sensory

  1. Go to 👅 Tasting & Sensory.
  2. How Tasting Works: taste vs. aroma vs. mouthfeel, why slurping works, and tasting as the cup cools.
  3. Taste at Home: the full home-cupping procedure (8.25g:150ml, 92–96°C, 4-minute steep, break the crust, slurp), side-by-side cupping, and the triangulation drill for palate training.
  4. Flavor Wheel: an interactive, center-outward explorer of the Coffee Taster's Flavor Wheel vocabulary.
  5. Sensory Science: how compounds map to what you perceive, the WCR Sensory Lexicon, and the full CVA structure.

Things to Consider

The pillar is built around the current CVA standard that replaced the retired 2004 cupping form in November 2024 — not the older protocol most guides still show. The triangulation drill is the fastest way to sharpen your palate, and everything you learn here feeds straight into better scores in the Ratings module.

11 Using Your Coffee Atlas

  1. Open Java Geek and find Your Coffee Atlas.
  2. Countries light up as you roast them: grey = not yet tried, amber = in your pantry, green = roasted.
  3. Purple-bordered countries are highly regarded origins you haven't tried yet — suggestions, not requirements.
  4. Click a country to see which regions you've covered versus what's still available.

Things to Consider

The Atlas tracks your roasting journey across origins automatically. As you add beans to inventory and roast them, the map fills in. Use it to discover new origins and track how wide your roasting experience is growing.

12 Using Your Coffee Journal

  1. Open Java Geek and find Your Coffee Journal.
  2. Milestones are grouped by category: Discovery, Geography, Growing Regions, Cupping Quality, Roast Technique, Processing, and Pantry.
  3. Click any milestone card to expand it — see the specific items counted and what's still available.
  4. Technique milestones display a sparkline of your last 5 roasts so you can see if recent roasts are improving or slipping.

Things to Consider

Per-country deep dives show progress against the total tracked count for that origin's regions. Craft mode has this tab off by default; enable it via Settings. The Journal gives you a structured way to track your coffee exploration beyond just counting roasts.

13 Using Your Coffee Insights

  1. Open Java Geek and find Your Coffee Insights.
  2. Cards surface as your data supports them: Quality Trends, Roasting Strengths, Brew Method Quality, Quality by Roast Level, Roasting Insights, and more.
  3. Targets adapt to each rating's roaster type (fluid-bed, drum, hybrid, stovetop) and roast level.
  4. Expert unlocks Pro Insights: batch-to-batch consistency, technique weak trends, and per-metric drill-down.

Things to Consider

Journey mode sees a simplified subset to avoid overload; Science mode sees the full surface. Tap the help button inside the Insights tab for the full science guide covering DTR, Maillard reaction, overlay tests, and rest-time research.

14 Your Roasting Quality in Java Geek

  1. Open Java Geek and look for the Roast Quality Score reference in the Roast Levels section.
  2. The score tab explains the full Roast Quality Score: all 9 weighted metrics, their exact target bands, and how to improve each one.
  3. See the scoring and deduction rules, and the differences between Home, Expert, and Commercial scoring profiles.

Things to Consider

This is the same score you see after each roast in the Roasting module — surfaced here alongside the coffee-science content so you can understand the theory behind the numbers. The score adapts to your roaster type, so hand-loggers and air-roasters get fair feedback.
