The Heart of the Craft

Roasting is where the magic happens — and where the frustration used to live. You nail an incredible batch, that perfect medium on a Sumatran wet-hulled with all the earthy sweetness, and then you can't quite remember how you got there. Which power setting at first crack? How long was the development time? What was the weight loss? Every detail matters, and losing even one means guessing next time instead of knowing.

The Roasting module is built for how home roasters actually work — especially air roaster users. Adaptive profiles for your specific equipment, temperature logging that keeps up with fast-moving roasts, and a roast-by-roast history that lets you compare, learn, and improve with every batch. No more lost details, no more guessing.

Overview

The Roasting module is where data meets craft. It connects directly to your Inventory — select a bean, set up your environment, and start logging temperatures. Every roast session captures bean temp (BT), first crack timing, environment conditions, and your target roast level. With an external probe (Expert tier), you can also capture exhaust temp (ET), Rate of Rise (RoR) curves, and multi-channel logging.

Over time, the module builds a comprehensive history of every roast you have done. Use History to spot trends, compare sessions side-by-side, and understand what makes your best roasts repeatable. Adaptive profiling learns from your equipment and history to provide tailored recommendations.

Quick Roast Adaptive / Monitor Roast History

Workflows

1 Quick Roast (Simplified)

  1. Tap the green Quick Roast button.
  2. Select a bean from your inventory (organized by region and country).
  3. Enter your batch weight and choose whether you're preheating.
  4. Pick your target roast level — you'll see flavor expectations and the recommended level for your bean.
  5. Choose a recipe: your own saved recipe, a past roast, or system-generated.
  6. Tap Start Roast — use the milestone buttons (Dry, 1C, 2C, Drop) during roasting.
  7. Enter final weight after the roast for weight-loss feedback, then rate 1–5 stars and save.

Things to Consider

Quick Roast is the minimal-friction path — milestone buttons instead of full temperature logging. It still feeds your history, weight-loss feedback, and ratings, so nothing is lost by keeping it simple.

2 Adaptive Roast (Full Profiler)

  1. Open Adaptive / Monitor Roast and select your roaster (set up in Settings).
  2. Choose a bean from your inventory. Use the filter to narrow by region, country, or processing method.
  3. Set the environment — ambient temperature (or charge temp if preheating) and location. Location calibration provides a first-crack time offset.
  4. Enter your dose in grams. RoastSource shows the optimal batch range for your roaster and warns if you are under- or over-filling.
  5. Select your temperature source and recording mode.
  6. Choose a roast level and review the generated profile — you can swap the profile source here (see the next workflow).
  7. Tap Start Roast for full temperature logging, RoR tracking, and adaptive recommendations.

Things to Consider

Environment logging significantly improves consistency — a cold garage vs. a warm kitchen can shift first crack timing by minutes. Location calibration adjusts expectations based on altitude and typical ambient conditions. Dose warnings prevent under-filling (uneven roast) or over-filling (stalling).

3 Choosing a Profile Source

  1. Set your roast level first — both flows assume the level is chosen before the source.
  2. Use the Profile source picker — the same picker appears in Quick Roast and Adaptive Roast: System / My Recipe / Past Roast.
  3. System (default): an auto-generated profile based on your bean, roaster, and roast level.
  4. My Recipe: pick a saved recipe, edit it inline, or tap + Create new recipe — recipes are shared between Quick and Adaptive.
  5. Past Roast: filter your history by bean, world region, country, growing region, processing, or roast level — sorted by rating so your best roasts surface first.

Things to Consider

Recipes and past roasts are scoped to the active roaster, so the picker only offers profiles that make sense for the machine you're roasting on. Selecting a source rebuilds the profile immediately.

4 Logging Temperatures

  1. In the Adaptive Roast setup, choose to enable temperature logging and select your temperature source (Roaster Display, External Meter, or USB Auto-Logger).
  2. Leave "Following profile" on (the default) — the app auto-logs the expected temperature at every profile step and on every heat/fan change, no typing needed.
  3. Tap the "expected" chip above the input to confirm the expected value at any moment.
  4. Type your own reading and tap Log (or press Enter) to override with your actual temperature.
  5. Tap First Crack when you hear the first audible crack; optionally mark Second Crack for darker levels.
  6. Tap End Roast, then review the temperature curve on the summary screen.

Things to Consider

"Following profile" keeps the log complete even when your hands are busy — typing a reading still overrides it. Manual logging works with any roaster, no external probe required. Already finished a roast off-app? Use the Log Past Roast button to enter it retroactively so your history stays complete.

4b Probe Temperature Logging Expert

  1. Connect a USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi temperature probe to your device.
  2. RoastSource automatically reads BT (bean temperature) and optionally ET (exhaust temperature) from the probe.
  3. Watch real-time temperature curves and Rate of Rise (RoR) update live during the roast.
  4. Multi-channel logging captures bean temp and exhaust temp simultaneously.
  5. Review predictive roast analysis based on probe data after the session.

Things to Consider

Rate of Rise (RoR) shows the rate of temperature change over time. A declining RoR after first crack generally indicates a controlled, well-developed roast. A rising or flat RoR can signal rushing or stalling. RoastSource reads temperature from a connected USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi thermocouple meter by connection type rather than by brand — connect the external probe meter your roaster setup already uses.

5 Reviewing History

  1. Go to the History view.
  2. Browse all past roast sessions, sorted by date.
  3. Use filters to narrow by bean, date range, or roast level.
  4. Tap any session to view the full details — temperature curve, timing, environment, and notes.

Things to Consider

History includes all logged data from every session. Use it to identify patterns — what settings produced your highest-rated roasts? Were there environment conditions that correlated with better or worse results?

6 Comparing Roasts

  1. In History, select two or more roasts to compare.
  2. Use the "What Changed?" comparison feature.
  3. View side-by-side differences in temperatures, timing, environment conditions, and scores.
  4. Identify what improved or needs adjustment for your next session.

Things to Consider

Comparing roasts of the same bean produces the most meaningful insights. Environment differences (ambient temperature, humidity) may explain unexpected score differences. The "What Changed?" view highlights the variables that differed most between sessions.

7 Importing Profiles (Coming in v7.0)

  1. Roast-profile import from Artisan, RoasTime, and Cropster is coming in v7.0.
  2. You'll upload a profile file and RoastSource will auto-detect the format and parse the data.
  3. Imported profiles will save to your history so you can compare them with your own sessions.

Things to Consider

Import will be included with Home in v7.0 — no higher tier required. Imported profiles will integrate fully with your roast history for comparisons, which is useful for transitioning from another platform to RoastSource.

8 Understanding Roast Defect Guidance

  1. After completing a roast, review the roast summary for any defect indicators.
  2. If a defect is detected, RoastSource shows a plain-language explanation of what happened — e.g., underdeveloped, baked, or scorched.
  3. Each defect includes a suggested fix for your next roast — adjust heat, extend development, or change fan speed.
  4. Tap "Read why" for optional detail on the chemistry behind the defect.

Things to Consider

Defect guidance is designed to help you improve, not to judge your roast. The plain-language explanations focus on what to try next time. The optional chemistry detail is there if you want to understand the science, but you never need to read it to benefit from the fix suggestion.

9 Adaptive Profiling

  1. Set up your roaster profile in Settings (brand, model, type, batch capacity, probes).
  2. RoastSource adjusts targets and recommendations based on your specific equipment characteristics.
  3. As you log more sessions, adaptive profiling learns your roaster's behavior.
  4. Recommendations account for your roaster's heat response, batch size sweet spot, and typical timing.

Things to Consider

Adaptive profiling requires your roaster profile to be set up in Settings first. The system becomes more accurate over time as you log more sessions. It accounts for your specific equipment's characteristics rather than generic roasting guidelines.

Tips & Best Practices

  • With an external probe (Expert tier), Rate of Rise (RoR) is the single most important metric for roast control — watch for a declining RoR after first crack.
  • Adaptive profiling improves with every session you log. The more data, the better the recommendations.
  • Environment logging reveals hidden variables — the same bean can taste different roasted in summer vs. winter.
  • Review your History monthly — comparing your best-rated sessions shows your long-term improvement trajectory.
  • The recommended curve is a guide, not a target to chase. When your temperature drifts from the line, make small, gentle adjustments rather than large corrections. Big changes in heat or fan create wild temperature swings and uneven roasts. A smooth, steady approach — even if you're a few degrees off the curve — produces better results than constantly overcorrecting.
  • End weight (post-roast) is optional but recommended. When recorded, RoastSource calculates weight loss percentage and compares it to expected ranges for your roast level and equipment. Over time, consistent weight loss data helps you fine-tune your roasting.
